High-level meeting with Iran’s Hezbollah
Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Hussein Emir Abdullahiyan went to Lebanon last night…
Abdullahiyan was alleged to have met with Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, which is supported by Tehran.
Al-Mayadeen television reported that attacks carried out by Hamas over the weekend were discussed.
On the other hand, if Israel launches a possible ground operation in Gaza, Hezbollah is expected to intervene in the war.
Following attacks launched by the armed wing of Hamas on October 7, thousands of people lost their lives as Israel responded.
As Israel faces off against Hezbollah in Lebanon in recent days, a source close to Hezbollah told AFP, on condition of anonymity, that Hezbollah and Hamas have long used the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of the powerful Guard. These groups are part of the so-called “axis of resistance”: Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian and other armed opposition groups against Israel backed by Iran.
On the other hand, Middle East expert Mohanad Hacı Ali of the Carnegie Middle East Center said: “Hezbollah may find itself at war. “Organizing a ground operation into Gaza will attract other elements as well,” he said.
“THE SITUATION COULD BE WORSE”
Recently, Israel announced that a military ground operation in Gaza was on its agenda.
Israel and Hezbollah clashed in 2006, and 1,200 people were killed in Lebanon, most of them civilians, while 160 people, mostly soldiers, were killed on the Israeli side.
“There is a risk that the situation will deteriorate further in the event of a trigger such as a ground attack in Gaza or civilian deaths on both sides of the Lebanon-Israel border,” a diplomatic source told the French news agency.
Hezbollah and Hamas, both described as “terrorist” groups by Israel as well as the United States, the EU and much of the West, have mended their differences after briefly being on opposite sides of the conflict in Syria.
Founded in the 1980s to fight the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon, Hezbollah has become Iran’s main proxy in the region with its activities in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
WARNED IN AUGUST
Hezbollah, the only Lebanese group to retain its weapons after the 1975-1990 civil war, now has a more powerful arsenal than the Lebanese national army.
In August, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said his group would only need “a few high-precision missiles” to destroy Israeli targets, including “civil and military airports, air bases, power plants” and the nuclear facility in Dimona.
Nasrallah warned that if a future conflict involves the “axis of resistance”… there will be no more Israel.
