The World Meteorological Organization warned! A new disaster is on the way

In the report titled “State of Global Water Resources in 2022” published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), water resources around the world and their situation were comprehensively discussed.

CALL FOR COOPERATION IN WATER

The report states that the frequency and severity of disasters such as floods have increased as a result of increased adverse weather conditions and melting glaciers due to climate change, and that monitoring of water resources around the world, sharing of data, cooperation between countries and investments must be increased to improve the water cycle, which has become irregular as a result.

Noting the lack of accessible and confirmed data, especially in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, the report states that steps must be taken to share data to better monitor the increasingly irregular water cycle.

IN 2022 THERE WERE PROBLEMS ALL OVER THE WORLD

The report states that many regions in Europe were affected by drought in 2022 and as a result, transport on rivers such as the Danube and Rhine became difficult, as well as the interruption of nuclear electricity production in France due to the lack of cooling water.

The report notes that shipping on the Mississippi River in the United States has been affected by extremely low water levels as a result of the drought in the country, and that the La Plata River basin in South America has also been exposed to the effects. negative effects of the drought since 2020.

IT CAUSED A MAJOR HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

The report mentions that there was a significant decline in hydropower production globally in 2022 due to decreased river flows as a result of the drought, and states that the drought also caused a major humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa.

EMPHASIS ON EXTREME DROUGHT

In his statement, WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said the report provides a comprehensive view of water resources around the world, saying: “Glaciers and ice sheets are melting before our eyes. Rising temperatures have accelerated and deregulated the water cycle. A warmer atmosphere retains more moisture. We are seeing much more intense rain and flooding. “On the contrary, we are witnessing more evaporation, drier soils and extreme droughts.” he made the assessment of it.

Taalas added that the report is a call to enable and develop the “Early Warnings for All” initiative, which aims to protect people from water or climate events caused by adverse weather conditions. (AA)
