Surprising research on climate change: at least 100 times…

Twelve scientists from universities and meteorological institutions in the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands and Brazil examined the impact of climate change on the extreme heatwave in South America under World Weather Attribution (WWA), an international initiative.

According to the study, while the El Niño effect was also seen in high temperatures in South America in August and September, climate change caused by human activities made the region at least 100 times more likely to experience a wave of extreme heat in question. The possibility of experiencing extreme heat waves in South America, except in the summer months, has been determined to be almost impossible without the effects of climate change.

TEMPERATURES EXCEEDED 40 DEGREES

Temperatures were between 1.4 and 4.3 degrees higher due to climate change. Although it was the first days of spring in the region, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees in Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina and Paraguay.

Scientists warn that if greenhouse gas emissions are not quickly reduced to net zero, similar heat events will become more frequent and extreme.

If global temperature rise reaches 2 degrees, heat waves are likely to occur every 5 to 6 years, and temperatures are estimated to be 1.1 to 1.6 degrees higher than the current climate.

“THE MAIN REASON IS CLIMATE CHANGE”

In his assessment of the research, Brazilian National Space Research Institute researcher Lincoln Muniz Alves stated that the effect of El Niño on temperatures in South America is limited and said: “Our research shows that the main cause of The heat wave is climate change. “Without climate change, it would be almost impossible for temperatures to be so intense in spring.” he said.

Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute researcher Izidine Pinto also noted that temperatures above 40 degrees, seen in spring in many parts of the world, have spread “alarmingly” and stated:

“This is a reality of our rapidly changing climate. Every year we experience more dangerously hot days. “Unless urgent measures are taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the spring heat wave will become more intense and affect fragile societies and ecosystems.”

“CAUSES DEATH”

The director of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Climate Centre, Julie Arrighi, pointed out that extreme heat waves cause deaths.

Arrighi stated that countries can save lives by planning against heat waves and said: “It is essential that every country and city has a temperature plan. “These plans, including early warning systems, are crucial to react to the heat and take action to protect the most vulnerable people.” he made the assessment of it.
