Orban: It is impossible to reach a migration agreement in the EU

Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban stated that it is impossible to reach an agreement on migration in the European Union (EU) under current conditions.

Speaking to the press at the Informal Meeting of the EU Council in Granada, Spain, Orban argued that the Agreement on Migration and Asylum that the EU is currently negotiating violates the laws and policies of Hungary and Poland, which do not agree with he.

“Would there be an agreement that violates their laws and they try to dictate to them? “It is impossible,” Orban said, adding that such an agreement cannot be reached not only today but also in the future, and that the position of Hungary and Poland is clear.

Speaking about the EU enlargement process, which was another topic of the meeting in Grenada, Orban said: “The strategic consequences of this should be analyzed first before accepting new members. “This was not done,” he said. Orban also opposed Ukraine’s possible accession to the EU, stating that the EU has never accepted a country that is at war and has unclear borders.

‘WE NEED AZERBAIJAN’

On the issue of Azerbaijan, the Hungarian Prime Minister said: “Azerbaijan is a great country. It is in the gas corridor and in a strategically key position. “If we want to reduce Russian gas, we need Azerbaijan,” he responded.

On the other hand, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, maintained that the EU needs a migration agreement.

Borrell said: “We can consider the deployment of border advisors not only in the Mediterranean, but also in the countries of North Africa and the Sahel, similar to practices in different parts of the world. “This is a difficult process, but it is not an option that should be left out,” he said.
