Arrest warrant against opposition leader in Venezuela
Venezuela’s attorney general’s office announced that an “arrest warrant” was issued against opposition leader Juan Guaidó, former president of the National Assembly (AN), who lives in the United States.
Venezuela’s chief prosecutor, Tarek William Saab, stated in a press conference that an “arrest order” has been issued against Guaidó, who has resided in the United States since April, accused of “money laundering, treason and economic damage to the State.” . . Noting that 3 prosecutors have been assigned to carry out the legal process regarding Guaidó, Saab said that they will request a red notice from Interpol to capture the opposition leader.
Saab claimed that Guaidó caused a loss of $19 billion to the State by establishing a false government and that the State Oil Company (Pdvsa) provided him with financing through its US subsidiary Citgo.
Expressing that they hope that Guaidó will be handed over to the country with the help of international cooperation channels, Saab pointed out that there are many investigation files open against the former president of the AN.
HE WAS DEPORTED FROM COLOMBIA
Juan Guaidó was not allowed to enter Colombia, where he went to attend an international conference on April 25, and was deported. Guaidó, who said that he encountered a similar situation in his country in Colombia, also expressed his satisfaction for the smooth exit thanks to the intervention of the United States.
Opposition leader Guaidó declared himself “interim president” of Venezuela on January 23, 2019 and received the support of many Latin American and Western countries, especially the United States.
The government coalition led by President Nicolás Maduro won the parliamentary elections held in Venezuela on December 7, 2020, and the opposition led by Guaidó boycotted the elections. (AA)
