Opposition leader arrested, country in crisis

Ali et-Tayaşi, a member of the political bureau of the Free Constitution Party, made a written statement on the issue on his Facebook page.

Tayaşi stated that the investigating judge of the Court of First Instance of Tunisia issued an arrest warrant against Musi and did not provide further details on the matter.

Some party members gathered outside the court to support Musi against the judge’s arrest order.

Musi’s lawyer announced yesterday that his client was arrested.

Musi, who supported the “extraordinary decisions” taken by Tunisian President Kays Said on July 25, 2021, which paved the way for a system change in the country, later turned against Said due to his attitude towards the political parties.

“EXTRAORDINARY DECISIONS OF JULY 25”

The extraordinary decisions announced by Tunisian President Kais Said on July 25, 2021 led to the creation of a kind of “exceptional situation” in the country.

Said, who froze the work of parliament and removed the immunities of parliamentarians, expanded his powers with new decrees on September 22, 2021 and completely subordinated the executive body to himself.

Within the framework of the “roadmap out of the political crisis” announced by Said, a constitutional referendum was held in the country on July 25, 2022, followed by early general elections.

In Tunisia, where the presidential system was introduced with the new constitution, it was also included in the constitution that a second parliament would be established under the name “National Regional and Local Council” in addition to the People’s Assembly.

Some groups in Tunisia describe Said’s decisions as a “coup” and argue that the country is moving away from democracy. (AA)
