Mysterious illness hospitalized female students
95 students fell ill at St. Teresa’s Eregi Girls’ Secondary School, located 374 kilometers northwest of Nairobi. The students were hospitalized due to the illness, the cause of which has not yet been determined.
Bonface Okoth, the district’s education officer, said in his press release that the legs of 95 students were paralyzed due to the disease, leaving most of them unable to walk. Okoth said the students were taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Following the incident, the school was closed indefinitely following a meeting between school administrators and Ministry of Education officials.
School officials announced that students can continue school after investigating the cause of the illness and taking necessary precautions.
Hospital officials claimed that blood samples were taken from the students to determine the disease and said the blood samples were sent to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) laboratories. (AA)
