Right-wing rebellion in the US Congress

In the United States, the House of Representatives was left leaderless when Democratic Party deputies also supported the vote organized by a group of far-right pro-Trump Republican Party deputies.

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who failed to manage the power struggle within the GOP, was voted out of office for making excessive concessions to Democrats, and eight members of his own party voted against him.

Although this measure, which caused differences of opinion among Republicans, was the first in American political history, McCarthy, speaking to reporters after the vote, announced that he would not run again.

After Democrats refused to intervene to save the leader of the rival party, Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy lost the vote 210-216, thanks to the votes of 8 lawmakers. This development, reflecting deep polarization among lawmakers in Congress, shows the growing influence of far-right extremists, and this step may provide an opportunity for Democrats to regain the House speakership.

This has raised concerns about who can rally support to lead this party in the House, rather than the Republican House Speaker, whom this far-right group doesn’t like even Democrats.

Days after McCarthy reached a compromise with Democrats during budget negotiations to avoid a government shutdown, a handful of Republican lawmakers voted to impeach him, making him the first president to lose his seat at the initiative of members of his own game.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Last January, McCarthy narrowly won the parliamentary elections after obstacles from the same group.

Democrats condemned House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for breaking his promise by changing the terms of a bipartisan deal reached just weeks ago in budget talks.

Members of McCarthy’s own party, notably Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, also called for his ouster, accusing him of lying.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Democrats helped unseat McCarthy.

McCarthy’s presidency was effectively spent fending off challenges large and small from the same far-right faction of his own party.

In particular, his agreement with President Biden to raise the debt ceiling further angered the rebels.

The final straw came with a chaotic final few days that could lead to a government shutdown. When McCarthy, who had promised for weeks that he would not work with Democrats, failed to keep his promise, Gaetz, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, quickly made good on his promise to unseat McCarthy.

While Gaetz opposed defense aid to Ukraine, he claimed that McCarthy had made a secret deal with Democrats.

Democratic Party lawmakers accused McCarthy of being an unreliable political chameleon and a fig leaf for the party’s extreme MAGA wing.

Democrats were angry that McCarthy visited the former president at Mar-a-Lago after briefly condemning Trump, whom they considered “responsible” for inciting the attack, in his remarks following the attack on the Capitol on January 6. Some Democrats were angry at McCarthy for launching an impeachment inquiry into President Biden.
