The authorities, who made a statement about the incident that occurred at the Siam Paragon shopping center, one of the most popular shopping centers in the capital, announced that 3 people died, according to preliminary findings. Four people were reported injured.
Upon hearing the shots, the tourists tried to escape from the building. Some visitors to the mall hid from the attacker inside the building.
Thai police said a 14-year-old suspect was detained and questioned.
While one of the injured was claimed to be a citizen of a foreign country, his nationality was not revealed.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said in a statement on social media platform “What I’m most concerned about is public safety,” he said.
In Thailand, where armed attacks are common, last year a retired police officer entered a nursing home and murdered 22 children. In 2020, a soldier carried out an armed attack in Nakhon Ratchasima. In that attack, 29 people died and 57 were injured.
