The president of Burkina Faso says that “elections are not a priority”
Traoré, who came to power a year ago in a coup d’état, evaluated his year in power on state television.
Traoré stated that the current constitution only reflects the opinions of a group of elites and that they will make some changes to the constitution.
He also noted that Burkina Faso will not hold elections unless it is safe enough for everyone to vote, and that elections are not a priority compared to security.
On the other hand, on the occasion of the first anniversary of Traore’s coming to power, his followers gathered on the streets of the capital, Vagadugu, and carried photographs of Traore in their hands.
The French publication Jeune Afrique wrote in two articles published earlier in the week that there was discontent and rising tension in the barracks in Burkina Faso. Following the articles, the magazine was banned from sale in the country on the grounds that it was creating chaos in the country, and access to its website was also blocked.
Then, on September 26, hundreds of people took to the streets of the capital, Vagadugu, to show their support for President Traore. The next day, the government announced that there had been a coup attempt in the country and that it had been prevented, and 4 high-ranking military personnel were arrested in connection with the attempt.
With a coup d’état in September 2022, President Captain Traoré overthrew Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who returned to power with a coup d’état in January 2022. Traore, then 34 years old, made history as the youngest leader in the world.
When Traoré was sworn in as president, he promised to improve the security situation in the country within 2 to 3 months and announced that elections would be held in July 2024.
Located in the Sahel belt of West Africa, Burkina Faso, with a population of 22 million, shares a common border line called “Liptako Gourma” with Mali and Niger.
Terrorist groups affiliated with Al Qaeda and DAESH frequently carry out attacks in Liptako-Gourma, which is larger than the area of Germany. (AA)
