Demoralizing assistance to the UN

United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed made a statement to the press on the last day of the 78th UN General Assembly, which lasted from September 19 to 26.

“DEPRESSING”

Noting that significant progress was made in the General Assembly discussions, Mohammed said: “It is demoralizing that only one of the five permanent members participated at the level of president. “If there had been a higher level of participation from those countries, perhaps we could have made more concrete progress on the Sustainable Development Goals or other agenda items.” he made the assessment of it.

Stating that it is not always possible to find immediate solutions to problems, Mohammed said the UN General Assembly is important for leaders to come together and “talk”.

78TH UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY IN NUMBERS

The Deputy Secretary General of the UN General Assembly and Meetings Management, Movses Abelian, reported that the General Assembly was attended by 88 heads of State and 42 heads of government.

Abelian said this was the highest level of participation ever seen.

Stating that 21 women addressed the General Assembly, Abelian noted that Burkina Faso gave the longest speech this year at 38 minutes, and Rwanda gave the shortest speech at 9 minutes.

Abelian stated that more than 100 side events were organized and more than 2 thousand requests for bilateral meetings were made.

Stating that approximately 13,000 representatives and diplomats have registered, Abelian announced that around 2,600 have received press accreditation. (AA)
