Passage of this law in India… The number of seats reserved for women in Parliament will increase
In her speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the legal regulations aimed at equal representation of women will come into force in the 2029 elections.
The legal rule to reserve 33 percent of seats for women in the lower house of parliament and state assemblies from 2029 was approved by both houses of parliament.
While the regulation has also received support from the opposition, there is a call for it to be implemented in the May 2024 general election, claiming that it will be implemented in 2029 because it is too late and will be unfair to women.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwa pointed out that although the representation rate of women in politics is about 24 percent internationally, the representation rate of women in parliament, who constitute about 48 percent of India’s population, is 15.1 percent.
While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been working on legal regulation aimed at equal representation of women since 1996, with the support of opposition parties, it is claimed that facing objections from local parties in the states has prolonged the process.
Furthermore, women in India are known to have more limited rights than men. (AA)
