Pope’s warning: the world is on the brink of nuclear war
Pope Francis sent a message to the conference held on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the peace circular called “Pacem in Terris” published in 1963 by Pope John 23, who was leader of the Catholic Church between 1958 and 1963.
CALL TO REQUEST NUCLEAR WEAPONS
According to Vatican News, the official publication of the Vatican, in his message, the Pope called on societies to eliminate nuclear weapons and use conventional weapons only for self-defense.
“As our world remains in the grip of the Third World War, which is being fought little by little, in the tragic situation of the conflict in Ukraine, the threat of resorting to nuclear weapons is not absent,” the Pope said.
Pope Francis noted that the current situation reminds us of the time when the world was on the brink of a nuclear war, as in the Cuban missile crisis in October 1962.
The spiritual leader of Catholics affirmed that a world free of nuclear weapons is possible and necessary.
The Pope stressed that conventional weapons should be used only for defensive purposes and not against civilian targets. (AA)
