Hundreds of bodies washed ashore… Angry people burned the president’s house

In flood-hit Libya, angry people break into the mayor’s house

After the terrible flood in Libya, in which thousands of people died or went missing, hundreds of people took to the streets of the city of Derna and demanded that the authorities be held accountable.

Angry protesters held a demonstration outside the Sahaba mosque in Derne, where thousands of people died horribly after being swept into the sea by floodwaters as a result of dams overflowing last week. Protesters demanding the prosecution of Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh and other officials set fire to the house of Derne Mayor Abdulmenam al-Ghaithi, who was dismissed after the flood.

International institutions want a transparent investigation to be carried out under the supervision of different countries into the disaster that destroyed the city of Derne. Although the World Health Organization reports that the number of deaths in the city is close to 4,000, it is estimated that this figure is much higher due to the thousands of people missing.

Many experts highlight that the warnings made before the disaster were not taken into account and the necessary maintenance of the dams was not carried out.
