Critical meeting between the US and China
A critical meeting took place at the White House. The White House statement stated that the meeting was part of efforts to maintain open channels of communication and advance relations in a responsible manner.
The statement states that Sullivan and Vang met in Malta on September 16 and 17 and that the two discussed key issues in US-China relations, global and regional security issues, the Russia-Ukraine war and the Taiwan question.
The statement said Sullivan noted the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and that both sides committed to continuing high-level consultations in the coming months.
The statement stated that this meeting was based on the meetings between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Indonesia in November 2022, and stated that Wang and Sullivan had sincere, important and constructive meetings.
LAST US VISITS TO CHINA
Following the visit of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in June, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Special Envoy for Climate Change John Kerry visited the country in July.
Additionally, former White House National Security Advisor and US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger visited Beijing in July and was received by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo also met with her counterpart Wang Vintao in Beijing in August. (AA)
