French President Macron announced: the ambassador was taken hostage
Speaking to the press during his visit to the town of Semur-en-Auxois, French President Macron said: “In Niger right now, as I speak to you, we have an ambassador (Itte) and diplomatic officials who are literally hostages in the embassy and food delivery is not allowed. “They eat with military supplies.” saying.
CRISIS BETWEEN FRANCE AND NIGER
The military government, which took power in Niger on July 26, gave the French ambassador in Niamey, Sylvain Itte, 48 hours to leave the country on August 25, but Ambassador Itte did not leave the country.
France announced that “the military junta is not an authority that can demand the departure of the French ambassador.”
The Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs then announced in a note sent to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 31 that Ambassador Itte’s immunity had been lifted and that he would be deported.
Following the note, tight security measures were taken around the French embassy in Niamey and Nigerien security forces began monitoring vehicles entering and leaving the embassy.
Likewise, security was increased around the air base called “Niamey 101” in the capital, where French soldiers were stationed.
It is known that the military administration, which could not enter the French embassy in Niamey due to the diplomatic immunity provided for in the Vienna Convention, wanted to “trap” Ambassador Itte, whose immunity had been cancelled, outside the embassy building .
The exact whereabouts of Ambassador Itte, who is still in Niger, is unknown.
COUP IN NIGER
In Niger, President Mohammed Bazum was detained by elements of the Presidential Guard Regiment on July 26, and that night the military announced that it had seized power.
The commander of the Presidential Guard Regiment, General Abdurrahmane Tchiani, became head of the transitional government called CNSP on July 28.
The CNSP appointed Lamine Zeine as prime minister on August 7 and announced the 21-member cabinet composed of soldiers and civilians on August 10. (AA)
