The European Union extended the sanctions imposed on Russia

The Council of the European Union decided today to extend for another six months the current sanctions imposed on 1,800 individuals and organizations due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In the EU Council statement, “The Council decided today to extend restrictive measures targeting those who undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine for another 6 months, until March 15, 2024.” Current restrictive measures provide for travel restrictions for natural persons, freezing of assets and prohibition of providing funds or other economic resources to identified individuals and organizations,” he said.

The statement continues: “Sanctions will continue to apply to approximately 1,800 individuals and organizations, many of whom are targeted in response to Russia’s ongoing unjustified and unprovoked military aggression against Ukraine. “As part of the sanctions review, the Council also decided not to include four people on the lists.”

Sources who spoke yesterday with the British news agency Reuters announced that the sanctions imposed on three people would be lifted. These people were listed as Russian businessman Grigori Berezkin, billionaire Farkhad Ahmedov and businessman Alexander Shulgin.

The European Union decides sanctions by unanimous vote of all member states. Each sanction decision is valid for 6 months and then this period is extended.
