Horrific image of the disaster in Libya: corpses springing from the sea
Libya is experiencing the worst flood disaster the world has seen in recent years.
Storm “Daniel”, which hit the central Mediterranean and hit eastern Libya on September 10, caused flooding in the cities of Benghazi, Beyda, Marj, Suse and Derna. Libya’s Government of National Unity announced that 6,000 people died in the flood disaster.
Libyan media announced that thousands of people were missing and that the death toll could double.
People look for the bodies of their relatives in the streets.
Speaking to Reuters, Civil Aviation Minister Hichem Abu Chkiouat said that “dozens of bodies are constantly emerging from the sea” and announced that reconstruction efforts will amount to billions of dollars.
It is estimated that the number of families displaced due to the floods exceeds 30 thousand. The country declared 3 days of mourning and asked the world for help, stating that Libya did not have the experience to deal with a disaster of this magnitude.
Hopes are gradually diminishing after three days of searching for the missing. The people missing in Derne, around 10,000, are believed to have been swept out to sea by floods.
Satellite photographs showed that the flood destroyed many houses.
Libya’s political division also makes rescue efforts difficult. (AGENCIES)
