The US relaxed sanctions on Iran in exchange for prisoner exchange: They will receive 6 billion dollars
As part of the prisoner exchange with Iran, the United States allowed the transfer of Iranian funds worth $6 billion from South Korea to Qatar, exempt from US sanctions.
According to a State Department document seen by Reuters, Iran will be exempt from sanctions so that the funds can be transferred.
Under the agreement announced to the public on August 10, 5 US citizens detained in Iran will be able to leave the country in exchange for the transfer of funds and the release of 5 Iranian citizens detained in the United States.
According to the document, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken decided that the sanctions exemption was in the interest of US national security.
With the document sent to congressional committees, the administration officially announced for the first time that it would release five Iranians detained in the United States under the agreement that secured the freedom of five American citizens.
