Terrible destruction in Morocco earthquake… Loss of life increases

Although the magnitude 7 earthquake that occurred in Morocco caused great destruction in many cities in the country, messages of solidarity and condolences came from around the world.

State television announced that the death toll in the earthquake exceeded 1,000 and hundreds of people were injured.

The earthquake, centered in the Atlas Mountains, brought people to the streets, especially in the tourist city of Marrakech, as well as the capital Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes, Agadir and Fez. Many buildings were destroyed in the historic center of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the earthquake killed hundreds of people in and around Marrakech and affected more than 300,000 people.

THE ARMY TAKES ACTION

The Moroccan army mobilized to support those affected by the earthquake. The army announced the deployment of planes, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, engineering vehicles and logistics centers, as well as response units, to support those affected by the earthquake.

The army’s written statement states that “following the instruction given to the army by the Supreme Commander of the Royal Armed Forces and Chief of the General Staff, King Mohammed VI, to intervene, the necessary measures were taken in the level of senior officers of the Royal Armed Forces and military garrisons to ensure communication and coordination with local authorities.

THE AFAD TEAM LEAVES

As rescue efforts continued, aid teams from many countries decided to join the efforts.

Preparations for sending the first team to Morocco at AFAD have been completed. Ankara Unit staff gathered at the Ankara Provincial Disaster and Emergency Directorate for the earthquake in Morocco.

In the event of an international call for help, the personnel who will go to the earthquake zone were informed about the construction structures, the state of health of the country and the work to be carried out in the damaged areas.

Algeria also announced that it would restart flights to Morocco to receive humanitarian aid, which were suspended following the economic crisis with Morocco two years ago. (AGENCIES)
