Flood death toll rises
Heavy rain and flooding continue to affect the Thessaly region of Greece.
Many towns in the region, especially Volos, Pilio, Larisa, Trikala and Kardiça, were flooded.
Vasilis Kikilias, Greece’s Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, announced that the number of people who lost their lives due to the floods rose to 10.
Kikilias stated that the 4 people are still missing.
It was highlighted that 20 helicopters continue their search and rescue work in the region.
Nearly 2,000 people were rescued from the region during search and rescue efforts, which also involved the country’s armed forces.
As a consequence of the overflow of the Pinio River, the height of the water in the region reached 9 meters.
Many villages in the region were evacuated as a precaution against the danger of flooding.
Specialist in Geology and Fight against Natural Disasters Prof. Dr. Efthimios Lekkas pointed out that the damage caused by the floods to the country’s agricultural production could exceed one billion euros.
Lekkas noted that many flooded houses are no longer usable.
As water and electricity cuts continue in the region, citizens are also suffering from a shortage of drinking water due to extensive damage to Volos’ water and sewerage system. (AA)
