North Korean nuclear submarine show

North Korea, which has stepped up its remarks toward the United States and South Korea, made a show of force with a ceremony unveiling its new nuclear submarine yesterday.

Kim and many high-ranking officials attended the handover ceremony for the new “tactical nuclear submarine,” which North Korean President Kim Jong-un described as “part of the nuclear deterrent.”

Addressing the ceremony, Kim stated that the enemies’ aggression has increased and stated that the rapid development of the navy is the top priority of national defense. Kim also announced that there are plans to build new models of the submarine in question.

News that the new nuclear submarine will patrol between North Korea and Japan has sparked tension in the region. While South Korean and Japanese officials announced that they will follow the nuclear submarine step by step, according to US experts, the new vehicle that emerged from the development of an old Soviet submarine will not provide the expected level of benefit to the North Korean military.

Pyongyang, which has recently ratcheted up tensions with successive missile tests and ballistic missile studies, is said to plan to install nuclear capability on all submarines in its possession.
