Dangerous approach at sea: warships collide

The Canadian battleship HMCS Ottawa collided with the Chinese military warship Luyang in the South China Sea, in disputed waters claimed by China.

This tension arose when Canada conducted joint naval exercises with the United States and Japan, according to CBC News.

The Luyang ship was reported to be approaching HMCS Ottawa and the Canadian ship’s officer was trying to obtain an intelligence image to closely monitor the Chinese ship.

It was also claimed that Luyang sent an unmanned aerial vehicle towards HMCS Ottawa, and that this vehicle remotely followed the Canadian ship.

An American ship communicated with Luyang and reported that they were approaching the area, so the Chinese warship gave way to other ships, but continued to follow.

HMCS Ottawa has engaged Chinese ships three times in the past week. (AA)
