Right to abortion in Mexico
The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) of Mexico announced that it decriminalized abortion at the federal level.
In a statement made on the social media account X of the SCJN, it was stated that the crime of abortion was eliminated from the Federal Penal Code, “The SCJN has decriminalized abortion at the federal level. All women and persons of childbearing capacity will have access to abortion services at any federal health center.” The statement was included.
The First Division of the SCJN also pointed out that the inclusion of a clause on the sanction of abortion in the Federal Penal Code is unconstitutional and denounced that women and pregnant women are the object of human rights violations.
So far, 10 of Mexico’s 32 states have been changing their laws, granting women the right to terminate a pregnancy for up to 12 weeks.
The country’s first law to decriminalize abortion was passed in 2007 in the Federal District of Mexico, the capital of Mexico. (AA)
