The border crisis reflected in the G20 summit
It has been reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which will be held in New Delhi, the capital of India, on September 9-10.
Speaking at the daily press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning announced that Premier Li Chiang will represent his country at the summit. Xi will be the first Chinese president not to attend meetings in person since 2008, when the G20 leaders’ summits are held annually.
News that Xi would not attend the summit had previously appeared in the Western and Indian press. In news based on diplomatic sources at the summit organization, it was claimed that the Chinese delegation voiced its objections to a summit deal on many issues, from the Ukraine war to economic burden sharing between developed and developing countries, from climate change to health in the preparatory meetings.
TENSION ON THE CHINA-INDIA BORDER
Some Indian observers expressed the view that China was “trying to undermine the Indian-hosted summit” due to disagreements caused by the border conflict between them.
Although negotiations to resolve tensions in the disputed Himalayan border regions continue, mistrust between Beijing and New Delhi on this issue continues.
During the informal meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Summit, Chinese President Xi agreed to continue the talks and reduce tensions in the region. (AA)
