Sources, who did not reveal their names, affirmed that the “candidacy criteria” will be changed to hide this detail in the electoral race of Putin, who will turn 71 next year. In the law change, which has not yet been made official, those who want to be against Putin will have at least 50 years.

YOUNG CANDIDATES RAISED CONCERN

Kremlin sources claimed that young candidates would make Putin look old, and that is why this plan came to the fore. Sources told Russian independent media outlet Meduza: “Putin doesn’t think he’s going to lose the election, but he thinks the appearance of a young candidate wouldn’t be very nice for him.”

In a Russian poll conducted in May, respondents described Putin’s age as “the third thing they disliked the most.” Putin, who is likely to face candidates from the far-right Liberal Democratic Party, the Communist Party and the center-left New People’s Party, did not comment on the issue. The New People’s Party is expected to nominate 39-year-old Vladislav Davankov.

HE CAN BE PRESIDENT IN 2036

“Putin thinks he won’t get many votes, but a young and energetic candidate may make voters question Putin’s age,” the sources said. In Russia, the presidency can be held for two consecutive terms, each of which lasts 6 years. Although Putin has held this position since 2012, he also held the same position between 2000 and 2008.

With the law he signed in 2021, Putin restarted his term and paved the way for his presidency until 2036. If no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote in the elections to be held on March 17, 2024, the second round will be held on April 7, 2024.
