The bill presented by France and the United Arab Emirates provided that the sanctions against Mali, consisting of an asset freeze and a travel restriction, would be extended until August 31, 2024, and the authority of the Panel of Experts until August 30. of September. 2023.

RUSSIA VETO

Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, vetoed the bill.

Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, argued that the bill ignored the “concerns” of Mali and Russia.

Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop demanded that the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission for Mali withdraw from the country “without delay” at the UN Security Council session on June 16.
