Sweden’s support for Denmark’s decision on holy books

The Swedish Prime Minister, Kristersson, evaluated the decision taken by the Danish government at a press conference.

Kristersson stated that countries exposed to terrorist threats should take urgent action, saying: “I have great respect for this decision taken by the Danish government. For Sweden to make such a decision, it needs to amend the Constitution. That is why it is difficult for Sweden to choose this path.” saying.

Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer said he was not surprised by the Danish government’s decision.

Strömmer stated that they were in consultation with the Danish government throughout the summer, saying: “The decision taken by the Danish government is very important. If we were to make a similar decision here, it would be a far-reaching interference with free speech. We try to find solutions considering the balance between security and freedom of expression.” He used the phrase.

“DENMARK’S DECISION LEAVES SWEDEN IN THE INTERNATIONAL ARENA”

Magdalena Andersson, leader of the country’s main opposition party, the Social Democratic Party, argued that the Danish government’s decision would leave Sweden alone in the international arena.

Andersson said: “Denmark and Sweden supported each other in the reactions to the Quran fire crisis. This decision by the Danish government will leave Sweden alone in the world. We become vulnerable in the international arena and we are left alone, with the eyes of the world on us”. he made the assessment of it.

Andersson stated that he was not very sure that the decision taken by Denmark was correct and that he could make a more precise assessment in time.

GOVERNMENT OF DENMARK TO PROPOSES LAW

Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said at a press conference today that they will soon submit to parliament a bill that will ban attacks on holy books.

Hummelgaard claimed that the sole purpose of the attacks on holy books was to “create hatred and sow discord”, and that the proposed law would be combined with a law that currently prohibits the burning of national flags.

“This law will punish those who burn the Koran and the Bible in public,” Hummelgaard said. This law will only focus on actions carried out in public spaces or with the aim of extending to the broader environment”. she had used the phrase.

PROVOCATIONS IN SWEDEN AND DENMARK

While attacks on the Qur’an have intensified in Sweden and Denmark of late, allowing these provocations provokes a backlash.

Far-right Danish politician and leader of the Solid Direction Party, Rasmus Paludan, had staged provocations to burn the Koran in the Swedish cities of Malmö, Norköpin and Jönköping and in the capital Stockholm during the 2022 Easter holidays.

Paludan burned the Quran in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm on January 21 and in front of the Turkish Embassy in Copenhagen on January 27.

In Stockholm, Salwan Momika set fire to the Holy Quran under police protection in front of the Stockholm Mosque on June 28, which coincides with the first day of Eid al-Adha.

Momika trampled on the Koran and the Iraqi flag under police protection in front of the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm on July 20 and in front of the Swedish parliament on July 14 and 31.

Momika attacked the Holy Quran in front of the Iranian embassy in Stockholm, again under police protection.

Bahrami Marjan, of Iranian origin, also burned the Holy Quran on Angbybadet beach in Stockholm on August 3 under police protection. (AA)
