Silence from the TRNC at the United Nations

Spokesperson for the UN Under-Secretary-General Florencia Soto Nino was asked why the UN and the UN Peacekeeping Force (UN Peacekeeping Force) in Cyprus reacted so different from the actions of the Greek Cypriot administration and the TRNC.

Nino said: “It is seen that the Greek Cypriot administration violated the buffer zone in 1996, 2003, 2004, 2012 and even in 2021 and built construction sites, military fortifications and even a university. The Turkish Foreign Ministry claimed that some of them passed through Turkish land with title deeds. In my research on the past, I see that the UN or the UNBG did not interfere or condemn the actions and projects of the Greek Cypriot administration. The Turkish Cypriot side of Northern Cyprus stated that the Pile-Yiğitler highway project, which UNHCR is trying to stop, is a humanitarian project and necessary for transportation. So how do you explain the clearly different treatment of the two parties? Also, don’t the UN and UNFICYP have an obligation to treat both sides equally? He left her question unanswered, saying that he didn’t have all the files with him and that he needed to examine them in more detail.

Expressing that the question should also be addressed to the UN, the UN spokesman said he would return. The UN spokesman has yet to respond after the question was emailed. (AA)
