UN: Intensity of war in Ukraine increases
The latest events in Ukraine were discussed in the UN Security Council. Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Assistant Secretary General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, informed member states that the war between Russia and Ukraine, which also violates the UN Charter, does not appear to end anytime soon.
DiCarlo noted that the UN will continue to support all “meaningful efforts” for a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine.
“IT MAY HAVE GLOBAL CONSEQUENCES”
“The violence of the war escalated after Russia’s decision on July 17 to withdraw from the Black Sea Grain Initiative.” In assessing him, DiCarlo drew attention to the growing tension and threats to freedom of navigation in the Black Sea.
DiCarlo warned that attacks on grain facilities could have “far-reaching global consequences,” threatening progress and having dire consequences for the nearly 345 million people around the world who struggle with food insecurity.
DiCarlo also criticized attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, stating: “These attacks cannot be legitimate wherever they occur and they violate international law.” He used the phrase. (AA)
