The BRICS countries issued a joint statement

The Second Johannesburg Declaration emphasized the importance of cooperation between the BRICS countries for the establishment of a fairer international order and a multipolar system, sustainable development and inclusive growth.

The statement reiterated the call for greater representation of developing countries at the UN, including the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Noting that the devastating impact of Kovid-19 on the global economy continues, the statement affirmed that multilateral financial institutions are encouraged to achieve a global consensus on economic policies.

BRICS COUNTRIES PROVIDE 1/3 OF WORLD FOOD PRODUCTION

The statement stressed that the BRICS countries, which produce one third of the world’s food production, attach importance to ensuring food security through agricultural cooperation.

The call of the BRICS for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was reiterated and it was pointed out that the Summit of the Sustainable Development Goals to be held in New York next month creates important opportunities in this regard.

It was also noted that Brazil’s candidacy to host the COP30 climate change summit is welcome and that 2025 will play a key role in the future of the global response to climate change.

THE USE OF LOCAL CURRENCY WILL BE ENCOURAGED

The statement stated that it supported the development of payment systems necessary to ensure a fast, cheap, transparent and secure flow of money among the BRICS members.

Highlighting the importance of agreements between member countries in local currencies, the need to encourage the use of local currencies was noted.

It was also noted that the New Development Bank (NDB) is of key importance in promoting infrastructure and sustainable development in member countries.

THE 2024 SUMMIT WILL BE HELD IN RUSSIA

The statement states that Argentina, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt and Saudi Arabia were invited to the community in the framework of the BRICS enlargement decision.

In the statement, which praised South Africa’s successful performance at the 15th BRICS Summit, it was stressed that Brazil, India, China and South Africa fully supported Russia’s presidency in 2024 and the hosting of the 16th BRICS Summit. (AA)
