Fire in Europe: many countries fight against the flames

Hitting Europe with record heat this summer, endless wildfires have left many countries face-to-face with a fight that has lasted for weeks.

The fire nightmare continues in many countries, especially in neighboring Greece.

Five-day fires threatening settlements in the Alexandroupolis region of Greece have not been brought under control due to strong winds. The Egnatia highway has been closed this morning due to the fire, which has also affected Meriç and Rhodope, in western Thrace.

The fires, which affect the whole country, continue in more than 60 points from Maritsa to the northwest of Athens. The fire that broke out on August 21 in the forest area of Viotia, about 120 kilometers north of Athens, has lasted for three days.

The fires in Italy caused concern.

Vehicles wishing to continue to Thessaloniki and Europe were advised to continue via Bulgaria. The number of people who lost their lives in two days due to the fire in the country was 20.

FOREST FIRES AT TWO MORE POINTS IN ITALY

A forest fire broke out near the island of Elba in western Italy and the city of Imperia in the north. Firefighters are fighting the fire.

Italian firefighters Vigili del Fuoco reported that Canadair-type firefighting aircraft and helicopters were deployed in both regions. It was claimed that the fire in Imperia spread from the bushes and attempts were made to prevent it from moving into the settlements.

In Tenerife, the fire was controlled days later.

A statement from Vigili del Fuoco states: “The forest fire on the island of Elba has been brought under control. Firefighting and cleanup work continues.

CONCERN ABOUT THE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN FRANCE

In France, which in recent days has been on red alert in the southern regions due to high air temperatures, production at the Saint Alban nuclear facility has been reduced due to a shortage of cooling water.

The authorities stressed that temperatures in the country could reach 42 degrees, breaking a record.

Spain burns for the fourth heat wave. Although the fire, which raged for days in Tenerife, Canary Islands, was finally brought under control, it caused extensive damage in the region. (AGENCIES)
