Sir Nils Olav III, who lives on Penguin Rock at Edinburgh Zoo, has been promoted to the honorary rank of Major General as the official mascot of the Norwegian Royal Guard.

Norwegian Royal Guard Lieutenant Nils Egelien, who attended the Royal Military Celebration in Edinburgh for a drill in 1961, was fascinated by the zoo’s penguin colony. Seeing that his troop’s gait bears an uncanny resemblance to the gait of black and white birds, Egelien had the Kingsguard adopt a penguin when he returned to the Scottish capital ten years later.

This penguin was named Nils Olav after Nils Egelien and King Olav V of Norway, who was on the throne at the time.
