Thousands of people in the UK await the outcome of their asylum application

The report produced by the UK Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) revealed that more than 130,000 claims awaiting a solution in the UK asylum system risk becoming a permanent problem.

Indicating that the cost to the country’s economy of asylum seekers receiving accommodation and financial support until the application was finalized was £3.6 billion, the report noted that the number of people who entered the country illegally, which was 299 in 2018, increased to 45 thousand in 2022.

The report also stated that as of March, 1,591 people were being held in removal centers in the country, and the daily cost of these people to the state was 113 pounds (approximately 4,000 Turkish lira).

In the report, which also indicated that the state placed some of the asylum seekers in hotels, the money spent on hotels alone was stated to be £2.3bn.

It was announced that the cost of accommodating an asylum seeker in a hotel is 90 pounds per day (approximately 3 thousand Turkish liras).

NUMBER OF IMMIGRANTS WITH unaccompanied minors 5 thousand 570

The report also included the risks of deportation within 28 days under the Illegal Immigration Act, which was enacted in July.

Emphasizing that irregular immigrants seek ways to stay in the country without trying legal ways for fear of deportation, the report stressed that this situation would lead to exploitation and poverty.

Noting that the number of irregular immigrants under the age of 18 who entered the country without a relative reached 5,570 with an increase of 34 percent, the report recalled that these children are protected by local administrations and this has increased the burden for the country.

The report also stated that the Illegal Immigration Law gives the government the right to deport irregular immigrants under the age of 18 after the age of 18, stressing that this situation will cause financial and emotional hardship for local governments.

£105K TO THIRD COUNTRIES

According to the report, the number of people who voluntarily returned to their country from England in 2022 was 2,000. While most of these were irregular migrants from Albania, the number of people sent by England to their country remained below 1,000.

England sent only 12 irregular immigrants to third countries due to the war and legal processes in their country.

The report also included the costs of removal proceedings. Consequently, the cost of deporting a person accompanied by judicial or security personnel is 22 thousand pounds (approximately 760 thousand Turkish liras), the cost of keeping them in the detention and expulsion center is 7 thousand pounds (approximately 240 thousand Turkish liras). Turkish lira) per year, and the cost for the services of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It was announced that 18 thousand pounds (approximately 620 thousand Turkish lira) and the legal costs amounted to an average of 1000 pounds (approximately 35 thousand Turkish lira).

It was stated that if the deported person was sent to a country other than their own country, an additional cost of £105,000 (approximately TL 3.6 million) paid to the third country was added to this cost. (AA)
