Hilary Alert in the US

Tropical Storm Hilary headed toward California after sweeping through Mexico’s Baja California peninsula with deadly force, causing severe flooding east and west of Los Angeles on Sunday.

One person died when streets turned into rivers due to severe flooding in the Baja California peninsula.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for much of Southern California, while flood warnings will go into effect today in the region accustomed to drought. Meteorologists stated that mountainous and desert regions can receive 12 to 25 cm of rain, which is the amount of rain usually seen in deserts in a year.

The first tropical storm to hit Los Angeles County since 1939 caused massive flooding in the San Gabriel Mountains east of the city and coastal areas in northwestern Ventura County. (Reuters)
