Warning from the European Union to the military administration in Niger
The President of the European Council, Michel, had a telephone conversation with the President of Niger Bazum. Bazum stressed his determination to act with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), while Michel reiterated the EU’s full support for ECOWAS decisions.
Michel reaffirmed that the EU condemns the “coup” and will not recognize the military administration. The two agreed to keep in close contact.
Referring to the deteriorating conditions of Bazum’s detention, Michel said: “The worsening of President Bazum’s condition will have serious consequences.” He said that he used the phrase.
The EU had previously suspended all activities in Niger “to avoid working with illegitimate authorities” and announced that it would support all decisions taken by ECOWAS.
