Robot taxis whose internet connections were cut caused chaos
According to the CNN story, videos on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, showed that many robot taxis called by music festival participants were having internet connection issues.
Eyewitnesses said many of the cruise ship’s robotic taxis closed intersections for about 15 minutes, raising concerns that emergency vehicles could prevent access to the area.
In a statement on the X social media platform, the company noted that the music festival caused wireless bandwidth restrictions on robot taxis and that they were working on the issue in question.
Aaron Peskin, president of the San Francisco Supervisory Board, said: “They are putting hundreds of these cars on our streets. They should stop doing this and work on it until they perfect this technology,” he added, adding that he was concerned about the dangers they would face should the problem recur.
Police and firefighters also reported sending letters to authorities expressing concern that autonomous vehicles could hamper emergency response teams.
The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that, as of last week, there have been 55 autonomous vehicle incidents in 2023, hampering emergency responses.
In San Francisco, robot taxis have been approved to operate 24/7 throughout the city. (AA)
