Decision of state of emergency in Ethiopia where violence escalates
The Ethiopian People’s Representative Assembly approved the decision of the state of emergency (OHAL) declared by the government due to the violence after the air strike in the Amhara region.
According to local media reports, the parliament approved the state of emergency decision taken by the Ethiopian federal government to prevent demonstrations in the Amhara region. Commenting on the parliament’s decision, Chief Government Inspector Tesfaye Beljige said that the State of Emergency decision is necessary to ensure the peace and security of the people. Beljige affirmed that the tension in the region has reached dangerous levels and affirmed that the conflicts have shaken the constitutional order.
It was claimed that 26 people were killed in the airstrike carried out by the Ethiopian army in the Amhara region on Sunday. The air attack was directed against demonstrators concentrated in the town of Finote Selam, who were protesting the entry of federal forces into the area.
THE CONFLICT CONTINUES FOR MONTHS
In Ethiopia, the federal government signed a peace agreement with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in November 2022. While all organizations in the region agreed to disarm, the militia group called “Fano” continued to clash with the military. .
The federal government declared a state of emergency on August 4 due to escalating fighting between the army and local militias in the Amhara region, and declared a loss of control in some areas of Amhara on August 7.
In a statement made by the Ethiopian State of Emergency General Directorate on 10 August, it was stated that security was guaranteed in many areas of Amhara, including Bahir Dar and Gonder, and that armed groups had withdrawn. (AA)
