Pope Francis strongly condemns the assassination of Villavicencio

Pope Francis sent a telegram of condolences for the assassination of Villavicencio, presidential candidate in the presidential elections scheduled for August 20 in Ecuador.

According to the telegram signed by the Vatican foreign minister, the Pope strongly condemned the “culpable” homicide of Villavicencio and called on all Ecuadorians and political figures to work together for peace.

In Ecuador, presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was shot dead on August 9.

Interior Minister Juan Zapata described the attack as a “terrorist political crime with the aim of sabotaging the August 20 elections.”

As part of the investigation, 6 Colombians believed to be related to the incident were arrested. (AA)
