Another sanction against Riyadh Salame is from the US.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has targeted Riyad Salame, the former head of Lebanon’s central bank, whose corruption and illegal actions contributed to the deterioration of the rule of law in Lebanon, the Treasury Department said. of the US in a statement.
In the statement, alleging that Riyadh Selame abused its power to enrich itself and its partners by investing hundreds of millions of dollars in European real estate through shell companies, OFAC also sanctioned 4 more family members, including members of Selame’s family and assistant, who helped cover up and facilitate these activities.
In the statement, it was noted that the US carried out this action together with the United Kingdom and Canada.
Brian Nelson, Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, said in his assessment of the issue that Salame flagrantly violated Lebanese law and used his position to enrich himself, his family and associates.
Noting that the former central bank governor holds the perception that the country’s elites do not have to abide by the rules that apply to all Lebanese, Nelson said they joined the UK and Canada in imposing sanctions on Selame for using its position for his personal financial interests and ambitions even as the economic crisis in Lebanon worsened.
