Israel announced: Damage the army
According to Israeli army radio news, the army spokesman made a statement on the matter. In the statement, it was noted that the process of undermining the effectiveness of the army (due to reservists leaving voluntary military service against government judicial regulation) has started and that the army may be damaged within a few weeks.
JURISDICTION
The “judicial reform” announced by Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin on January 5 includes changes such as limiting the powers of the Supreme Court and the power to have a say in judicial appointments.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on March 27 that he would postpone judicial regulation, sparking an increase in mass protests and strikes across the country, but announced that he would put judicial regulation back on the agenda after Parliament approved the 2023-2024 budget in late May.
The government had recently pushed the button for judicial regulation again after negotiations with the opposition stalled.
The Israeli Parliament approved the bill that will lift the control of the Supreme Court over the government as part of the government’s judicial package, in the session boycotted yesterday by the opposition.
The bill, known as “plausibility,” removes the power of the Supreme Court to overturn government decisions on the grounds that they “do not serve the public interest, are unreasonable, or create a conflict of interest.”
JUDICIAL PROTEST LEAKS TO THE ARMY
There is 3 years of compulsory military service for men and women in Israel. Israelis completing their mandatory military service are regularly called up for military training each year based on their specialization on a voluntary basis, but fighter pilots and other elite units participate in training and operations more frequently throughout the year.
Penalties up to prison terms apply to those who refuse to serve in Israel.
Some 10,000 army reservists, including fighter pilots, have announced they will leave voluntary military service against the government’s court order.
Israeli Defense Minister Yaov Gallant was reported to have tried to reconcile with the opposition to overcome the rift in the army. Before the bill was voted on in the General Assembly of Parliament, images of Gallant, Netanyahu and the “architect” of the judicial package, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, were reflected on cameras.
