Great escape from the burning Greek islands
Due to the week-long wildfires in Greece, people on the island of Corfu had to gather on the beach to be evacuated, while tourists flocked to the airport on the island of Rhodes.
19,000 people were evacuated at the end of the week after the fires that have continued since last Wednesday on the island of Rhodes descended to the southeast coast of the coast and reached the seaside resorts.
Rhodes and Corfu are the favorite islands in Greece, especially for tourists from England and Germany.
“We are on the seventh day of the fire and it is still not under control,” Rhodes deputy governor Konstantinos Taraslias told state television ERT.
Although forest fires are common in Greece in summer, climate change is causing more extreme temperatures in southern Europe. Temperatures have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius in most regions over the past week and are expected to remain at that level for the next few days. (Reuters)
