Scandalous accusations against the FBI

The US Department of National Intelligence (ODNI) has released the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) opinion on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which grants surveillance power over foreigners.

The document claimed that the FBI conducted searches using the last names of a US senator and a state senator “targets of a foreign intelligence service,” but this violated interrogation rules.

It was also shared that the FBI conducted inquiries using the social security number of the state judge who filed a complaint with the FBI about a police officer, who failed to meet interrogation standards.

In this context, intelligence agencies were called upon to strengthen their surveillance mechanisms.

ARTICLE 702 DISCUSSION

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Section 702, which was enacted after the 9/11 attacks on the US and grants broad powers to intelligence units, authorizes US intelligence to monitor non-US citizens abroad.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan asserted that Section 702 is the cornerstone of US national security and that the Joe Biden administration supports enactment of the law.

He indicated that the necessary work is being carried out to re-enact article 702, which he pointed out as important in the face of threats derived from the activities of China, Russia, cyberattacks and terrorists.

Some MPs argue that FISA Article 702 has contributed to important achievements, but has been abused many times, and should be reorganized.

Intelligence officials, on the other hand, support the article as it allows for fast and reliable intelligence gathering on foreign intelligence targets. (AA)
