Switzerland has been fighting forest fires for three days
The Swiss authorities reported that the situation due to the fire in Valais is stable, but the flames may increase due to the wind.
Swiss Army helicopters supported the firefighters, while ground forces personnel were stationed in Valais.
Weather conditions and especially wind were claimed to have played an important role in controlling the fire, which spread over an area the size of approximately 100 football fields.
While it is estimated that it will take a few weeks for the fire to be completely extinguished, the slowdown in the wind last night prevented the spread of the flames. The authorities announced that lighting a fire in open areas is prohibited.
WHAT HAPPENED?
More than 200 people were evacuated from the surrounding towns due to the fire. While wildfires continue to plague Europe and many different parts of the world, the fire in Valais was recorded as the first major wildfire in Switzerland this year.
Last year, approximately 750 thousand hectares of land turned to ash in forest fires in the European region. (AA)
