Support of aircraft from Europe to Greece that fight against fires
Despite all efforts, most of the forest fires that have been going on for 3 days in many places in Greece cannot be controlled.
According to Greek media reports, fires in the Lutraki and Megara regions near the capital Athens were spread by the wind, while at least 50,000 acres of forest and agricultural land, as well as many houses and vehicles , became unusable in the fires in the Attica region, where Athens is located.
As a precautionary measure, some roads were closed to protect the oil refinery near Athens due to the fires in which some settlements were evacuated. The Greek Meteorological Service warned that the risk of fire remains high today.
The heat wave is expected to peak on Thursday and Friday.
Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsotakis is expected to go to the National Center for the Coordination of Civil Protection Operations and Crisis Management today to obtain information on the course of the fires. Vasilis Kikilyas, Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, announced that 2 people were arrested in connection with the fires.
On the other hand, it was reported that the European Union (EU) decided to send 4 firefighting planes to Greece, where forest fires continue. (AA)
