Hong Kong Minister’s Smoking Advice: Stare

China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Health Minister Lo Chung-mau urged citizens to build an anti-smoking culture and advised citizens to “watch” smokers in prohibited areas.

According to the South China Morning Post news, Minister Lo made remarks on the fight against smoking at the health services panel of the Hong Kong Legislative Council. He stated that in addition to the images from security cameras, the images taken by citizens will also be used to detect smokers in prohibited areas.

Vowing to develop laws to prevent smoking, Lo said: “We can observe smokers before the police come to arrest smokers in areas where smoking is prohibited.” He told her that the smoking ban can become an unwritten rule that is embedded in the culture, like standing in line while waiting for the bus.

Under current law in Hong Kong, those who smoke in prohibited areas pay a fine of approximately $192. (AA)
