The Ukrainian parliament agrees to move the Orthodox Christmas

The Ukrainian parliament wants to change the date on which Orthodox Christmas is celebrated from January 7 to December 25. The purpose of the change is “to dissociate the party from the Russian legacy”. President Volodimir Zelensky introduced the bill himself.

Two of the three largest Orthodox churches in Ukraine had already decided to switch to the Gregorian calendar, which both Catholics and Protestants use. In 2017, December 25 became an official public holiday in Ukraine. However, the country’s largest Ukrainian Orthodox church has so far adhered to the Julian calendar, which is also used in Russia. The church, which still has ties to Moscow, has yet to comment on the change.
