Call of the embassies of 37 countries to the Hungarian government

37 countries took action against the far-right government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Hungary… The embassies of 37 countries, especially the US, called on Hungary to protect the rights of LGBT people in the country and change the law against The discrimination.

The Hungarian government, which banned the promotion of homosexuality to those under 18 years of age in 2021, provoked a strong reaction. Embassies and 10 cultural institutions, including the British Council, the Estonian Institute and the Institut Français, issued a joint message ahead of the “gay pride parade” to be held on Saturday this week.

The Hungarian government fined Lira Kereskedelmi, one of the country’s largest bookstores, for failing to sell Heartstoppers, the book by British author Alice Oseman, in a bag.

The statement read: “We are concerned about the legal and political discourse in Hungary, which excludes LGBTQI+ communities and embraces international human rights and human dignity laws. We have called on leaders and governments here and elsewhere to respect and protect the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals and communities. We want laws that create discrimination to be repealed.

The Orban government, which has ruled the country since 2010, has defended itself by explaining that this law is not aimed at LGBT communities, but is designed to protect children.
