UN: Guterres works for Syria aid mechanism

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric answered questions about the Syrian aid mechanism, which did not receive United Nations Security Council (UNSC) approval for its mandate extension on July 11, at the press conference daily.

Recalling that the Secretary General requested an extension of the mechanism for 12 months, Dujarric said that the main reason for this was to facilitate planning.

Dujarric said: “Currently we have nothing left. Nothing goes through the border crossing, where 85 percent of the aid is received.” saying.

“The UN Secretary General continues his work on the mechanism and conducts negotiations. We hope to have a positive result.” Dujarric said that the Secretary General shared his suggestions and thoughts with the United Nations Security Council and that the United Nations Security Council made the final decision.

In the United Nations Security Council, two separate bills, which provided for expanding the mandate of the mechanism that provides aid to the northwestern regions of Syria through the Cilvegözü border gate, could not be passed.

According to the draft resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council in 2014, international aid was sent from the Cilvegözü border gate to the northwestern regions of Syria.

Aid, usually in the form of food and medicine, is said to have reached approximately 4 million people.

With the latest decision taken on January 10, the mandate of the aid mechanism was extended until July 10. (AA)
