The highest value was detected in Italy since air temperatures began to be recorded in Europe. In Syracuse, on the island of Sicily, thermometers registered 48.8 °C in August 2021.
In Turkey, the Institute of Meteorology warned that for the week of July 12-18, “normal seasonal temperatures are estimated to be 5 to 10 degrees above the southern and western parts, and 2 to 6 degrees above in the other regions. Consequently, the temperature can reach 44 degrees in Antalya on Friday.
An estimated 60,000 people died in Europe last year due to complications related to the heat wave.
According to Karsten Haustein from the University of Leipzig, this month can be recorded as the hottest month in history: “By the hottest month in history, we mean the hottest month in the last 120,000 years. Temperatures will cool down a bit in the southern hemisphere over the next few days, but as El Niño strengthens in July and August, we are likely to see warmer days.”
